I confess I’d not heard of this marketing phrase before, but I certainly understand it in terms of photographing products for advertising.

Catalogue and brochure photography normally shows products on a white or corporate colours background. The product in question normally being shown square n, with some indication of size, shape and colour. These photographs capture the product ‘as is’. Perfect for catalogue, brochure and e-commerce website photographs where customers want to compare one product against another.
A product appreciation photograph captures a more abstract view, perhaps only showing details or just a small piece of the product. Perfect for advertising where there’s an element of ‘tease’. For some assignments I’m asked to provide elements of ‘desire’ where a customer can associate themselves or their lifestyle with the product photograph.
