Photographers – Chase Jarvis

Another admired photographer, is Chase Jarvis.

This video was essentially the turning point in my photographic career. The first time I saw this video I was simply blown away.

I must have watched this over and over again…. and still do. When I first saw this I just knew, this is what I want to do. It was from that moment on that I’d decided commercial photography is for me.

I think what struck me was the variety, and of course given the number of images, he admits himself that there are warts and all. For an upcoming photographer such as myself, it meant that it was OK to make the odd mistake, as long as the overall photoshoot was a success.  Today we know this is very much the case, the combination of long photoshoots, lighting changes, dressing up in black costumes, photoshop techniques, you name it, its in demand by commercial photography clients.

Chase Jarvis has gone on to increasingly spread the word of photography to the internet. Linking with other key members of the industry, The Strobist, Zack Arias, David Nightingale, Jasmine Star, to mention but a few.  He even spread himself into the world of iPhone Apps, and linked this to a book of his iPhone pictures at the same time.

Even today I was listening to him link with other high profile people, not necessarily in the photography industry, this time another one of my favourite motivational speakers, Tim Ferriss.

Photography, …. yeah, piece of cake.

Maybe after a lifetime of using a camera that may well be true, but even 20 years on I’m still learning.  For those who’ve just got over the hurdle of a compact camera and have just bought their first D-SLR, all those new controls are quite daunting. I’ve been there I know.

Although I’ve helped out a number of serious amateur photographers informally in the past,  I’ve now decided to do something a little more structured  that really gets amatuer photographers over that initial phase of ownership, struggling with all those controls, and results that can be a quite disheartening. I’ve just created a course in conjunction with Comberton Village College that will run from September 2010. This is an evening class, just one evening per week where I run through a wide range of common problems and their solutions, what all those controls do, and most of all how to get better images and gve you more confidence in using your new D-SLR. Some of the subjects covered are below.

At the end of the course students will have an understanding of:

  • Aperture priority mode
  • Shutter priority mode
  • The dreaded manual mode
  • The relationship between shutter speed, aperture and ISO
  • Using flash on and off camera
  • The differences between lenses and what to look for when buying a lens
  • The rule of thirds
  • Composition and why images look good
  • The common photography mistakes and how to solve them
  • Shooting portraits, the key elements
  • Black and white photography
  • RAW, jpg and image sizes and formatting

The course has sufficient flexibility to cover areas of photography beyond those listed and where students require help.

This course does come with the caveat that it really needs people to sign up in the right numbers for it to run, sadly a part of the business of education.

So if you think the topics are of interest, and you’re willing to share your images and experiences with your fellow students, go ahead, give it a go.

UPDATE:

Since this entry was posted I’ve had quite a bit of interest from people who are unable to make the college course and may consider a smaller group or one-to-one session on similar subjects. As yet I don’t have anything definitive planned, but if you’re interested please drop me an e-mail. If there’s enough interest I will do my best to find an alternative for you.

UPDATE 2:

I’m now getting a lot of hits from photographers who’d like to know more about courses, training and photo gear, please use the contact form, to let me know you have an interest in this or other courses.

The Photo Gallery

The photo gallery shows examples of my photography in and around Cambridge and beyond. I regularly use these portrait, landscape, and commercial photographs as examples when teaching my photography courses.

Depending on which photography training course you choose, you too can learn the techniques and settings to achieve the same results yourselves.

I try to avoid any emphasis on which camera you own, and concentrate more on the composition and use of your camera settings. I teach mostly SLR based photography training and less of the digital compact camera based training as the results from digital SLR cameras are significantly better in general.

Lightroom Training Courses

Photography Training in Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire

Our Lightroom Course teaches you both the basics and some in-depth details about the Lightroom Workflow. From importing your images and tagging, through image adjustment both in Lightroom and out to Photoshop and other applications, then back into Lightroom and sharing and printing your images. More on the Lightroom Course is here...

Photo Training – SLR Photography for beginners.

This course is ideally suited to those buying their first SLR camera. The course tries to avoid as much technical jargon as possible, and instead concentrates on the essential skills.

You don't need to have a specific brand of SLR camera such as the more popular Canon and Nikon SLR's. This course is suitable for other brands also.

The aim is for you to go away with new skills and an ability to capture images you thought weren't possible and the inspiration to do so.
