Wedding Photographer based in Cambridge - Chris Wray

My Style of Wedding Photography

Hi, I’m Chris, a documentary wedding photographer based in Cambridge. I specialise in capturing informal and relaxed wedding photographs that tell the story of your day. No posing, lines, or annoying egos meaning you’ll just relax and enjoy the day.

Inspired by the photojournalism style seen in magazines and newspapers, reportage wedding photographers have become increasingly popular in recent years for photographing weddings in a more natural style. This style of reportage wedding photography allows me to work unobtrusively, capturing more of the emotions of the wedding and requires the minimum of interventions and guidance.

I combine this reportage wedding photography style with an emotional portrait shoot of the bride and groom, taking them briefly away from their guests to relax and enjoy each others company alone, usually with a glass of champagne. Here I just allow them to concentrate on each other while I capture the emotion and intimacy between them. Very little guidance is needed even for those who are shy in front of the camera.

I’ll plan the timing of any group shots with you, to best retain the flow of the proceedings, and using the minimum of fuss to get the shots you need, so both you and your guests can concentrate on the celebrations.

I’ve always wanted to show photographs that are a little bit different. I don’t like to see wedding photographs that all look the same, or lines of rigid guests not enjoying themselves. I like to produce photographs that have a sense of excitement and emotion about them.

Cambridge Wedding Photographer

I am based in one of the small South villages of Cambridge, but have regularly been commissioned for weddings all over the South East, London, and the Midlands. I am lucky to live near some of the most spectacular Cambridge wedding venues, which is an excellent opportunity to work at fantastic historic venues, providing amazing backdrops to your wedding photographs.

Despite being a Cambridge wedding photographer, I am more than happy to travel throughout the UK and internationally. I do not charge any travel expenses for weddings in Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire and most of the South East.. Please contact me for details if your wedding is further afield.

As a professional wedding photographer and as a teacher of photographer in my spare time, I understand the components of good composition, and always try to incorporate these elements into my wedding photography. I make best use of available light in my wedding photographs with high speed lenses and the latest low light cameras to avoid the use of flash where possible.  I never use flash during the wedding service, which is usually a requirement for most wedding venues.

My role as a wedding photographer begins well before the day, as I like to meet the couple both at the initial consultation and wherever possible at the venue beforehand. This helps us establish exactly what you can expect from your wedding photographer but more importantly establishes a rapport which will help you feel comfortable on the day. Your wedding photographer is a big part of your day, so it’s important to choose someone you get on well with.

My Past Photography

I’ve been taking photographs since I owned my first “proper” camera in 1982. That camera travelled everywhere with me, capturing friends, relations, travels, things that just interested me. I was always capturing the moments from a (misspent) youth, that are still cherished by friends today.

Some 20+ years on and things are just the same really, from capturing the intimate unseen moments at a wedding, to bringing objects to life in the studio. I still love to photograph people. Other professional photographers comment on my ability to create a rapport with the subject that brings out the best images, even of the shy and self-conscious.

Initially I took to corporate and business photography, but during this time I was asked repeatedly to consider weddings and family portraits. So in 2009 I opened the calendar to add wedding and family portrait packages to complement my commercial work.
